Though Packer secured the telecast rights for various sports all around the world, it was cricket that made him famous and his channels popular. Since the start of cricket telecast in 1956, Cricket Australia (CA), then known as Australian Cricket Board of Control, had been giving the telecast rights to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) for a lower price. It did not believe in getting into multi-year contracts with commercial televisions for broadcasting cricket.
